Description
We were brought to this universe with a simple mandate, survive and prosper, to guarantee the survival and prosperity of our species. For now, we are doing a poor job on the prosperity, but with important advances in the last hundred years. Sadly, we are doing nothing about survival, simply relying on our luck. As our global population numbers stabilize, solutions can now be imagined to definitively improve both our survival chances and our prosperity. This essay simply presents a very raw and preliminary proposal for one of those solutions. We propose the human colonization of our oceans and deserts. Therefore, spreading humankind more evenly around our planet's surface.
Starting with the oceans, a new type of floating structure is presented. They are particularly useful to store energy, allowing a greater dependence on renewable intermittent energies, like the sun and the wind. They are also well suited to support sea farms and the seeding of our oceans with huge seaweed forests. These forests absorb dioxide carbon 20 times faster than land forests, have no risk of burning in wildfires, and the carbon is efficiently trapped when the seaweeds die and sink into the abyssal deeps. The proposed technologies are all readily available and proven, being much simpler, cheap, robust, and environmentally friendly than the alternatives being proposed to tackle climate changes.
