Storm's first appearance in literature was in verse Liederbuch dreier Freunde, and it is curious that one of the joint authors of this volume was the since distinguished historian Mommsen.

Storm continued to write verse, chiefly lyrical, and attained a creditable standing as a poet, but his reputation will rest on his work in prose.
