Idelsohn, the noted twentieth century musicologist, estimated the number of melodies set to this liturgical text at more than 2000. An interesting custom of setting each stanza to a different melody can be found in cantorial manuals of the 18th century. This book contains 96 melodies, many with chords and arrangements.
