Even today universities adhere to a time-honored hierarchy of professors, readers, lecturers, demonstrators, technicians--a structure first established in the European anatomical "theaters" of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. These were the players in the theater of anatomy--though inevitably the cadaver took center stage.
