About the Author
Plato was born around 428 B. C. in Athens, Greece, one of four children in a family of aristocrats. As the story goes, his name was actually Aristocles, after his grandfather, but his wrestling coach, nicknamed him Platon, meaning broad, because he had a robust physique. As a boy, he studied grammar, music, philosophy, mathematics and gymnastics by distinguished teachers. He was a student of Socrates and a teacher of Aristotle. Around the age of forty, he founded one of the earliest known schools in Western Civilization. Later in life, he became involved in politics, but he was arrested and sold into slavery, almost dying. Eventually, an admirer bought his freedom and sent him home. According to sources, Plato died in his sleep somewhere around 348 B. C., making him around 80 years old. His best known work was of course "The Republic," which was published sometime around 380 B. C.
