This book describes an National Science Foundation–funded project to explore the effects of incorporating inquiry- and narrative-based video clips into interactive science museum exhibits in order to make them more personally meaningful for visitors. It covers creating the videos and evaluating visitor responses, and draws lessons for creating engaging and compelling exhibit experiences. The enclosed DVD includes the video clips used in the analysis.

About the Author


Sue Allen received her Ph.D. in Science Education from the SESAME program at UC Berkeley. At the Exploratorium she directs the Department of Visitor Research & Evaluation, one of the largest in-house museum research groups in the world. Sue has conducted studies of teacher professional development, but now focuses on the informal learning of visitors using the public space. Her current research interests include methods for assessing learning, exhibit design, personal meaning-making, and scientific inquiry.
