Welcome to America English Language Learners Starting Strong shares a special heartwarming non-fiction story for new immigrant children. It reveals supportive information for English Language Learners who have moved to the United States with their families. These students will be more prepared for the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. They will see significant and important ways to enrich the lives of the many Americans they will meet at their new school and throughout the rest of their lives. Introductory and essential English skills are included for parents to help their children adjust to their new lives and especially the American educational system. Tips are included to help families retain their heritage, culture and first language, while embracing their new lives in the United States.

Julie Gamwell received a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education for Washington State University and a Masters in Science in TESOL (Teaching English to Students of Other Languages) from Queens College, City University of New York. Julie began her teaching career as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Sierra Leone, West Africa and later spent another year in Taipei, Taiwan, learning Mandarin while she taught adults. She has taught in mainstream classrooms and for 16 years as a Bilingual Specialist in the Seattle Public Schools. Julie lives in Seattle with her husband and son.
